4ī¸âƒŖ specially designed workshops were carried out with great success under the “𝐂đĸ𝐭đĸđŗ𝐞𝐧-đŦ𝐜đĸ𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, đ€đđ¯đ¨đœđšđœđ˛ 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐜đĸ𝐚đĨ 𝐂𝐨-𝐑𝐞đŦ𝐩𝐨𝐧đŦđĸ𝐛đĸđĨđĸ𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨đĢ 𝐓đĢ𝐚đŦ𝐡 𝐅đĢ𝐞𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐚đŦ đĸ𝐧 𝐂𝐲𝐩đĢ𝐮đŦ” program supported by Ocean Conservancy, to gather the views of stakeholders on suitable, effective and applicable measures to address the marine litter issue. đŸŒŠđŸš¯

📊 The results from these workshops are the following:

ℹī¸ In their opinion, the 3 main origins of marine litter are:

â€ĸ Left on the beach by tourists/bathers that use the restaurants and bars 🏖

â€ĸ Disposed of directly into the sea by the shipping, offshore, and port industries ⛴

â€ĸ Transported to the sea by rivers 🏞ī¸

.

ℹī¸ In their opinion, the 3 most severe impacts caused by marine litter are:

â€ĸ Killing fish and other marine organisms 🐠

â€ĸ Threatening public health ⚕ī¸

â€ĸ Affecting the tourism and economy of the country 📉

.

ℹī¸ The stakeholders also identified the most effective measures to address marine litter in Cyprus, which are the following:

â€ĸ Cultivate environmental awareness in younger generations 👩‍đŸĢ

â€ĸ Apply littering fines as a deterrent đŸ’ĩ

â€ĸ Enforce Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)

.

👉 The outputs from this workshop will be used to form a Policy Tool i.e. an Advocacy Tool for AKTI to present to high-level decision-makers.
