4ī¸âŖ specially designed workshops were carried out with great success under the “đđĸđđĸđŗđđ§-đŦđđĸđđ§đđ, đđđ¯đ¨đđđđ˛ đđ§đ đđ¨đđĸđđĨ đđ¨-đđđŦđŠđ¨đ§đŦđĸđđĸđĨđĸđđ˛ đđ¨đĢ đđĢđđŦđĄ đ đĢđđ đđđđŦ đĸđ§ đđ˛đŠđĢđŽđŦ” program supported by Ocean Conservancy, to gather the views of stakeholders on suitable, effective and applicable measures to address the marine litter issue. đđ¯

đ The results from these workshops are the following:

âšī¸ In their opinion, the 3 main origins of marine litter are:
âĸ Left on the beach by tourists/bathers that use the restaurants and bars đ
âĸ Disposed of directly into the sea by the shipping, offshore, and port industries â´
âĸ Transported to the sea by rivers đī¸

âšī¸ In their opinion, the 3 most severe impacts caused by marine litter are:
âĸ Killing fish and other marine organisms đ
âĸ Threatening public health âī¸
âĸ Affecting the tourism and economy of the country đ

âšī¸ The stakeholders also identified the most effective measures to address marine litter in Cyprus, which are the following:
âĸ Cultivate environmental awareness in younger generations đŠâđĢ
âĸ Apply littering fines as a deterrent đĩ
âĸ Enforce Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)

đ The outputs from this workshop will be used to form a Policy Tool i.e. an Advocacy Tool for AKTI to present to high-level decision-makers.
