The young green consumer: the citizen of tomorrow

Our way of living, working, studying, having fun with friends, and consuming things, has an enormous impact on the earth's natural resources.  The actions and choices we make every day are linked to the rest of the world and the environment. Consequently, each and every one of us has a role to play in ensuring that the earth is a healthy place for all living things!

Do your bit in saving the world!

Be a green consumer!

From July 2003 the Greek Cypriot youth board "SOMA AKRITON" and the Turkish Cypriot youth board "HASDER" worked in close cooperation, for the realization of the bi-communal project "The Young Green- Consumer, the Citizen of Tomorrow". The scientific consultant of the program is AKTI- Project and Research Centre. The target of the programme is to contribute to efforts of changing the consumption behavior of the Cyprus youth, to the direction of green, sustainable consumption.

Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots between 6 and 25 years old participated in the implementation of the project and had the chance to be involved in environmental training through experience. The children and youth were challenged to think before buying a product, to recycle, to prefer products that respect nature and adopt consumer habits which improve their quality of life and their health.

The main activities that have taken place during the implementation of the project were the following:

·                    1. Ecological camping. The eco-camp took place at Liso and Peristerona villages, at Paphos district in August 2003. The children and youth had the chance to enforce some good environmental practices.

·                    2. Visit to Brussels. In December 2003, young people from Soma Akriton traveled to Brussels and visited European Commission's offices.  They got informed on several matters dealing with green consumption and the European Union environmental legislation.

·                    3. Field Visits. Groups of children and youth visited an aluminum recycling factory, the Kotziati's landfill and several supermarkets. In each of these visits, the children and youth had the opportunity to attend a special environmental training on each matter.

·                   4. Research for the consumption habits of the Cyprus youth. A special questionnaire was prepared by the scientific team of AKTI, according to the international standards, aiming to identify the profile of the young Cypriot consumer. Some very interesting results came up. Download Report.
