Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Ωκεανών: Συνεργασία ΑΚΤΗΣ με Τμήμα Αλιείας
Την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Ωκεανών τιμά το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ ανακοινώνοντας τη συνεργασία του με το Τμήμα Αλιείας και Θαλασσίων Ερευνών (ΤΑΘΕ) στην αξιολόγηση των θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων στην Κύπρο.
Σύμφωνα με σχετική ανακοίνωση, η παρακολούθηση των θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική, καθώς επιτρέπει την αναγνώριση των πηγών, δηλαδή από πού προέρχονται τα απορρίμματα, ώστε να εφαρμοστούν στοχευμένα μέτρα και συγκεκριμένες λύσεις που να στοχεύουν στη μείωση τους.
Προστίθεται ότι υπό την επιστημονική επίβλεψη του Κέντρου Μελετών και Έρευνας, ΑΚΤΗ, υλοποιήθηκε η πρώτη παγκύπρια ερευνητική προσπάθεια για συλλογή, καταμέτρηση και καταγραφή των παράκτιων θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων.
Τα αποτελέσματα από αυτή την έρευνα, σε συνεργασία με το Τμήμα Αλιείας και Θαλάσσιων Ερευνών θα υποβληθούν ως επίσημα δεδομένα της Κύπρου για την Οδηγία-Πλαίσιο για τη Θαλάσσια Στρατηγική, αναφέρεται. Σε συνδυασμό με στοιχεία που θα συλλεχτούν στο μέλλον από τις ίδιες παραλίες, σημειώνεται ότι θα είναι δυνατή η παρακολούθηση της αποτελεσματικότητας πολιτικών, όπως η απαγόρευση της πλαστικής σακούλας και άλλες πρακτικές που συμβάλλουν στη μείωση των θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων.
Η Διευθύντρια του ΤΑΘΕ, κα. Μαρίνα Αργυρού δήλωσε ότι «η μείωση της κατανάλωσης των πλαστικών μιας χρήσης και κατ’ επέκταση των αντίστοιχων απορριμμάτων και όχι μόνο, πρέπει να αποτελεί συνειδητή προτεραιότητα μας τόσο προς τις υφιστάμενες αλλά και στις μελλοντικές γενιές, αφού η προστασία και διατήρηση ενός υγιούς και καθαρού θαλάσσιου περιβάλλοντος είναι ευθύνη και δικαίωμα όλων μας».
H Πρόεδρος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της ΑΚΤΗΣ, Δρ. Ξένια Ι. Λοϊζίδου, είπε ότι «μέσα από τη συνεργασία όλων μας, στηριγμένοι σε πραγματικά δεδομένα πεδίου και σοβαρή επιστημονική ανάλυση, μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε τι γίνεται και να στοχεύσουμε αποτελεσματικά στη μείωση της πλαστικής ρύπανσης. Γιατί οι θάλασσες μας έχουν γίνει σούπες πλαστικών και αυτό είναι πολύ κακό».
Επισημαίνεται ακόμη πως η Οδηγία-Πλαίσιο για τη Θαλάσσια Στρατηγική (2008/56/ΕΕ) της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, της οποίας ο βασικός σκοπός είναι η επίτευξη Καλής Περιβαλλοντικής Κατάστασης, απαιτεί την ανά τακτά διαστήματα παρακολούθηση των θαλάσσιων απορριμμάτων με βάση συγκεκριμένο πρωτόκολλο, έτσι ώστε να δημιουργηθούν οι βάσεις δεδομένων που δίνουν αυτές τις πληροφορίες.

AdvocaCY: Participate, learn, challenge, decide
AKTI’s project titled ”AdvocaCY: Participate, learn, challenge, decide: stronger Cypriot Civil Society for sustainability, advocacy and change!” has been selected amongst 54 applications and awarded funding from the Active Citizens Fund Programme in Cyprus .
Having the UN Sustainable Development Goals at its core, this project aims to engage Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot civil society organizations and informal groups, with a focus on the younger generation and in ensuring gender balance, in understanding their human right to a sustainable and healthy environment.
With “Knowledge leads to awareness; Awareness leads to change” as its motto, the aim of this proposal is to create synergies and join forces among CSOs and informal groups and to build networks of active citizens across the divide. The project has a solution-oriented approach which leads to the achievement of two targets: (1) build skills and capacity, raise awareness and promote advocacy among citizens for their right to a sustainable environment as set by SDGs (2) to boost bi-communal cooperation on promoting sustainability, an issue that affects both communities and is a win-win field of cooperation. In so doing, transform this collaboration into a peace building tool.
The overall result of the project will be its demonstrable (through KPIs) contribution to a stronger and more sustainable civil society on the island, greater bicommunal cooperation and intercultural dialogue, and more active citizens.
The AdvocaCY project benefits from a grant under the Active Citizens Fund Cyprus programme, funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, through the EEA and Norway Grants 2014-2021.

Citizens in Northern Ireland are able to participate in consultations and surveys for governmental initiatives through the online consultation tool Citizen Space.
The online platform is developed and run by the Northern Irish government and features activities from several governmental departments, including the Department of Communities (DfC), Department for the Economy (DfE), Department of Education (DE), Housing Executive (NIHE), etc.
Once a consultation is completed, all responses are carefully analysed and the results are made widely available, with an account of the views expressed and the reasons for decisions finally taken, in line with Northern Ireland’s Open Data Strategy for 2020-2023.

Ο διαγωνισμός απευθύνεται σε όλων των ειδών παράκτιες επιχειρήσεις, με στόχο ιδιοκτήτες/διευθυντές και εργαζόμενοι των παράκτιων επιχειρήσεων, να λάβουν μέτρα για τη διαχείριση των πλαστικών αποβλήτων, συμπεριλαμβανομένων αυτών που παράγουν κατά την λειτουργία τους, αλλά και αυτών που παραμένουν στην παραλία από τους επισκέπτες.

Τριακόσια εβδομήντα κιλά σκουπίδια από τον καθαρισμό της παραλίας Sandy Beach της Λέμπας
Το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ σε συνεργασία με το Σωματείο Κυματολισθησης Πάφου (ΣΟ.ΚΥ.ΠΑ), και τους νέους εθελοντές από το The International School Of Paphos διοργάνωσαν εκστρατεία καθαριότητας στην παραλία Sandy Beach της Λέμπας με το σύνθημα “Ας αφήσουμε στην άμμο μόνο το ίχνος μας αυτό το καλοκαίρι”.
Στο πλαίσιο του καθαρισμού συγκεντρώθηκαν σκουπίδια 370 κιλών πλαστικά οικοδομικά υλικά, κομμάτια από ξύλο. και άλλα.
Η Ακτομηχανικός/ Πολιτικός Μηχανικός και Πρόεδρος του ΔΣ του Κέντρου Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ Ξένια Λοϊζίδου ανέφερε πως οι θάλασσες μας έχουν γίνει “σούπες” πλαστικών, τα μικροπλαστικά είναι παντού, τα αναπνέουμε, τα καταπίνουμε, ζούμε μαζί τους και πρέπει να μπορέσουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε το μεγάλο κίνδυνο της πλαστικής ρύπανσης μαζί με τις υπόλοιπες μορφές ρύπανσης.

New Publication: Seasonal and geographic variations of marine litter: A comprehensive study from the island of Cyprus
As part of the project MarLitCy, AKTI alongside the other partners on the project has a new publication in the world-renowned marine litter journal, Marine Pollution Bulletin.
This paper is based on a years worth of data collected from targeted beach cleanups across the geographic spread of the island. Such a comprehensive spread of data from the island of Cyprus has never before been achieved, making the publication of this paper a proud moment!
