Reflecting on an Unforgettable Day: “Let’s Clean Up the Sea” – 6/12/2023

What a day to remember! On December 6, 2023, 32 incredible volunteers came together, turning community, collaboration, and volunteering into a powerful force.

Highlights:

  • 32 dedicated volunteers made a lasting impact.
  • On land, we tackled 116 kilos of waste, including a mattress.
  • From the seabed, 82 kilos of waste were lifted, including a vacuum cleaner.
  • Thanks to AKTI’s source identification workshop, volunteers gained valuable insights into classifying different types of waste.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to each and every participant and supporter for making this initiative a success!

Today, AKTI Project and Research Centre celebrated a remarkable 23 years of environmental initiatives along the picturesque Geroskipou Beach on November 29.

In a symbolic gesture, AKTI hosted the festivities at Geroskipou Beach, attracting over 200 participants who actively engaged in activities themed around the Sea and Sustainability.

Volunteers and organizations joined AKTI in paying tribute to its anniversary and recognizing the organization’s diverse contributions. Participants included students and educators from Agias Paraskevis Geroskipou Gymnasium, Second Elementary School of Geroskipou, and First Elementary School of Paphos, members of the Cyprus Autism Association, Geroskipou Adult Care Center, the Paphos Coastal Fishing Association, citizens, volunteers, and representatives from the Municipality. Attendees took part in beach cleaning initiatives and witnessed a captivating demonstration of a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) courtesy of the SeaTecHub project.

Participants witnessed Tiganokinisi Caravan’s presentation, showcasing science experiments on converting used oil into biodiesel. The Tiganokinisi Caravan also offered scientific demonstrations promoting sustainable practices.

Dr. Xenia I. Loizidou, Chair of AKTI’s Board of Directors, expressed, “The substantial turnout and enthusiastic response to our invitation today are particularly touching, affirming that these 23 years of AKTI’s existence stand for 23 years of impactful work. Once again, AKTI Project and Research Centre has transcended the borders of Cyprus, aiming to develop innovative tools to promote active engagement through its participation in a pioneering educational program held in Norway from November 22 to 25. The project, titled “Communication Tools for Effective Public Engagement and Advocacy,” is funded by the Active Citizens Fund Cyprus program and facilitated by the Norwegian non-profit media organization, Norsensus Mediaforum.

AKTI and Norsensus Mediaforum join forces for the second time, continuing their excellent collaboration that emerged from the AdvocaCY project: “Participate, Learn, Decide, Challenge: Strengthening Cypriot Civil Society for Sustainability, Advocacy, and Change!” Within the framework of the Advocacy project, a survey involving 65 Civil Society Organizations was conducted, revealing three key needs: strengthening the ability to approach and activate the public, improving the digital presence of CSOs, and adopting best practices for creating dynamic collaborations and networks.

The two organizations met this time in Norway with the common goal of jointly creating practical tools to address the aforementioned needs. AKTI’s team participated in hands-on training in Oslo, focusing on issues related to mapping and revising the real needs of the public, enhancing tools for a comprehensive communication strategy of CSOs, using of artificial intelligence for streamlining content ideation, and exploring innovative methods to enhance citizen participation. In addition to the planned activities, AKTI and Norsensus attended Oslo Recycling Week activities in Oslo and  participated to gain diverse stimuli.

In the next stage, the two organizations will consolidate the knowledge gained in the program into a powerful knowledge transfer tool to be shared with other Cypriot CSOs, enabling them to confront the three critical problems identified during the AdvocaCY project research.
