Mare Nostrum Network Workshop 2016!
The Mare Nostrum Network is intended to serve as a support platform for civil society organizations involved in ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) and conservation throughout the Mediterranean coast.The purpose is to form a network of active citizens, associations, NGOs and other civil society organizations that have shown their commitment to the protection of the Mediterranean.
These members have joined forces to create a unique collaborative, bottom-up system committed to ensure the sustainable development of their local communities along a healthy Mediterranean coast.
Ms. Christiana Melinioti, Member of the Green Cluster Management team, representing AKTI Project and Research Centre participated at the 2nd Mare Nostrum annual workshop, which took place in Le Herrandura, Spain. The main aim of the workshop was to focus on Marine Litter and opportunities in Mediterranean Sea Conservation projects.

INFORMATION VISIT TO BRUSSELS
We are proud to announce that Koula Aristodemou will represent AKTI Project and Research Centre in the information visit to Brussels organized by the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, between 29 November and 2 December 2016. The main focus of the visit will be the acquaintance on European Union’s institutions and citizens’ rights, while it will provide participants networking opportunities for possible future collaboration.

For the first time in Cyprus, AKTI Project and Research Centre with the Green Cluster launches the Green Cluster Awards & Trade Fair Event: A one day event dedicated to Green Cluster members (existing and potential), innovators and start-ups, and local and international supporters of the Green Cluster. At the Event:

- Εnjoy an exhibition of Cypriot innovative services and SMEs

The Results from AKTI’s Summer 2016 Beach Cleanup Campaign in Politis Newspaper
In July 2016, AKTI organised 10 beach cleanups with 10 local authorities around the island of Cyprus, from Protaras all the way to Polis Chrysochous. The results from the campaign show that small items of litter (such as cigarette butts, straws, pieces of paper, food wrappings) that are left behind by beach goers and that cannot be picked up by the local authorities’ cleanup equipment, are an important waste. These results are referenced in an article written by Katerina Stefanou and published in Politis Newspaper on the 21st of August. You can read the article here.

AKTI Project and Research Center launches the «GREEN CLUSTER SYNERGIES COMPETITION», the first of its kind in Cyprus! The objective is the creation of synergies among Cypriot enterprises, to achieve innovation through cooperation and extroversion of ideas.
Are you a Cypriot micro – enterprise, start – up or individual entrepreneur, interested in sustainability and innovation?
Become a Green Cluster member, develop and submit your synergy concept, with at least one more Green Cluster member, and get ready to compete!
A panel of experts will evaluate and assess the proposals, based on the following criteria: structure, market potential, implementation potential, extroversion potential, innovation, sustainability.
The first three winning synergies will be awarded and promoted locally and internationally.
- 1st Prize: €2000 to cover the expenses of the winning team to travel and participate in an international training/ conference/ exhibition/ networking event of their choice.
- SPECIAL AWARD for synergies from the Tourism, Hospitality and Agro-Industry sectors: One week of networking travel in India. Explore potentials to expand your business. All expenses covered!!! Sponsored by the High Commission of India in Cyprus.

CALL for Volunteers: Beach Clean-ups & Chiringuitos Responsables!
AKTI Project and Research Centre is looking for volunteers, for its environmental activities for summer 2016, in cooperation with Municipalities and Community Councils of Blue Flag beaches!
The activities consist of:
1. Beach Clean-up, recording of marine litter per category in AKTI’s Cyprus Marine Litter Database, which is linked to the international database of Ocean Conservancy.
2. Chiringuitos Responsables: Beach bars, cafes and restaurants, are informed as to how they can be more environmentally friendly.

OPEN APPLICATIONS: International Delegation, Developing Nature Youth Experiences within the city!
We are pleased to announce that AKTI Project and Research Centre within the Green Cluster is accepting applications for the International Delegation:Developing Nature Youth Experiences within the City training seminar. The training aims to offer professional networking opportunities, exchange of ideas and help promote the development of nature youth experiences within the city. The training will begin on Wednesday 1st June until Tuesday 7th June. The training seminar is being organised by the Society for the Protection in Nature in Israel with AKTI Project and Research Centre being partners. One Green Cluster member will be accepted to participate. Participation fee is only 60 EUR. Accommodation and food during the training seminar will be covered. Join us for a Beach Fun Run and Speed Beach Clean Up with the American Embassy on Saturday 23rd April and 7th May 2016!!
On Saturday, 23 April 2016, AKTI with the Green Cluster and MalitCy projects participated at an event organised by the American Embassy in Cyprus, on the occasion of Earth Day. The event began with a short speech, followed by a group run along the cliffs at Governor’s Beach with sweeping morning views of the Mediterranean. Members of AKTI, within the framework of MarLitCy, then gave a short presentation and organised a five-minute beach “speed clean up” followed by a short source identification workshop to educate participants on common sources of marine pollution.
On Saturday, 7th May at 9.45am, the U.S. Embassy and AKTI, along with other runners and volunteers, will join together for another beach fun run clean up, followed by a 5-minute beach speed cleanup and source identification workshop led by AKTI, within the framework of the MarlitCy project, and with the participation of other NGO partners.
