Η δράση #potavristou επιστρέφει και φέτος μετά την τεράστια επιτυχία που είχε και τις 3 χρονιές υλοποίησής της. Ο κάθε πολίτης, η κάθε παρέα μπορεί να ποταβριστεί εκεί που είναι, να μαζέψει τα σκουπίδια που βλέπει γύρω και να ανεβάσει τα δεδομένα του στην εφαρμογή Clean Swell είτε να στείλει μήνυμα στις σελίδες της ΑΚΤΗΣ στα κοινωνικά δίκτυα. Επίσης μπορεί να ανεβάσει φωτογραφίες από τον καθαρισμό στα δικά του κοινωνικά δίκτυα με τα #potavristou, #akti, #SeaTheChange.

Ιστορικό της δράσης

Το #potavristou πραγματοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2019. Αποτελεί μια πρωτότυπη εκστρατεία που ξεκίνησε από μια αυθόρμητη πρωτοβουλία πολιτών και διοργανώθηκε σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι το #potavristou αποτέλεσε μια «προφητική» δράση. Σε ανύποπτο χρόνο η ομάδα του #potavristou σκέφτηκε και υλοποίησε μια ενέργεια που πετυχαίνει τον καθαρισμό των ακτών με τη συμμετοχή πολλών πολιτών/εθελοντών αποφεύγοντας όμως ταυτόχρονα τον συγχρωτισμό, που είναι το μεγάλο ζητούμενο στην εποχή του Covid19!

Διεθνείς Αναγνωρίσεις

Το #potavristou έλαβε διεθνή αναγνώριση από τη πρώτη χρονιά εφαρμογής του! Το 2020, ο Διεθνής Οργανισμός Ocean Conservancy διοργάνωσε Παγκόσμιο Διαγωνισμό για την ανάδειξη των δέκα πιο καινοτόμων δράσεων καθαρισμού ακτών για το 2019. Στο διαγωνισμό υποβλήθηκαν εκατοντάδες προτάσεις από 130 και πλέον χώρες. Το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ συμμετείχε στο Διαγωνισμό με την υποψηφιότητα για το #potavristou όπου βραβεύθηκε ως μια από τις πιο καινοτόμες δράσεις παγκόσμια! Ακόμη, για το έτος 2021, το #potavristou έλαβε αναγνώριση και υποστήριξη από το MIO–ECSDE (the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development). Όσον αφορά την φετινή χρονιά του 2022, η καμπάνια του #potavristou έλαβε για ακόμη μια φορά την υποστήριξη από τον διεθνή οργανισμό του Ocean Conservancy,στο πλαίσιο της διεθνούς εκστρατείας #TeamSeas.

Αποτελέσματα #potavristou μέχρι και σήμερα

Συγκεκριμένα, στις 21 Σεπτεμβρίου του 2019, Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Εθελοντικού Καθαρισμού των Ακτών, οι διοργανωτές κάλεσαν το κοινό, όπου και αν βρισκόταν, να βοηθήσει να καθαριστούν οι θάλασσες και οι ακτές μας. Περισσότερα από 500 άτομα, τη συγκεκριμένη μέρα, ποταβρίστικαν και μάζεψαν τα σκουπίδια που βρήκαν γύρω τους, όπως πλαστικά και γυάλινα ποτήρια, μπουκάλια, σακούλες, συσκευασίες τροφίμων, αναψυκτικών, δίχτυα κ.λ.π.  Συνολικά μαζεύτηκαν 5,5 τόνοι σκουπιδιών, που περίμεναν τις πρώτες νεροποντές για να ξεκινήσουν τον φαύλο κύκλο τους, να φτάσουν στη θάλασσα και να επιστρέψουν στη ζωή μας «εκδικητικά», ως μικροπλαστικά.

Η δράση μετά την μεγάλη ανταπόκριση που είχε το 2019, είχε επαναληφθεί καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του Σεπτεμβρίου του 2020. Τα αποτελέσματα της εκστρατείας #potavristou_2020 ήταν εντυπωσιακά: 2016 εθελοντές συμμετείχαν και έστειλαν τα δεδομένα τους, από 187 τοποθεσίες στην Κύπρο και 20 τοποθεσίες στο εξωτερικό! Συλλέχθηκαν 12 τόνοι απορριμμάτων, εκ των οποίων το 70% ήταν πλαστικά! Επίσης έγιναν 12 εκατομμύρια προβολές σχετικά με τη δράση, μέσα από τα κοινωνικά δίκτυα της ΑΚΤΗς και τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης!

Με την ίδια επιτυχία συνεχίσαμε και την χρονιά του 2021. 2590 εθελοντές κατάφεραν να συλλέξουν 13.5 τόνους σκουπιδιών από 114 σημεία σε όλη την Κύπρο αλλά και από 63 σημεία στο εξωτερικό! Ωστόσο ανησυχία προκαλεί το γεγονός ότι το 87% αυτών των 13,5 τόνων απορριμμάτων ήταν πλαστικό, ποσοστό πολύ μεγαλύτερο από το προηγούμενο έτος! Κάτι τέτοιο δείχνει την αυξανόμενη σημασία της δράσης #potavristou και την ανάγκη να συνεχίσουμε την ευαισθητοποίηση και τον καθαρισμό των παραλιών μας!

Συνολικά, τα τελευταία 3 χρόνια, 5016 εθελοντές συμμετείχαν στη δράση του #potavristou από όλη την Κύπρο και από 134 σημεία παγκόσμια, συλλέγοντας 30,5 τόνους σκουπιδιών!

Οδηγίες #potavristiou

1. Μπορείς να συμμετέχεις ατομικά, με την παρέα σου ή με κάποιο οργανωμένο σύνολο.
2. Όπου και να βρίσκεσαι είτε αραχτά στην παραλία, είτε σε σκάφος, άπλωσε το χέρι σου και … #potavristou! Μάζεψε ό,τι σκουπίδι βλέπεις γύρω σου. Αν είσαι σε σκάφος, μάζεψε ό,τι σκουπίδι επιπλέει. Αν θέλεις, βέβαια, μπορείς να επεκταθείς και να κάνεις ένα πιο εκτενή καθαρισμό ακτής!
3. Χώρισε σε ομάδες και μέτρησε πόσα σκουπίδια μάζεψες: π.χ. τόσα πλαστικά ποτηράκια, τόσες μπουκάλες, τόσες γόπες τσιγάρων, τόσες σακούλες
4. Βγάλε τα φωτογραφία.
5. Ανέβασε τη φωτογραφία στο Facebook/Twitter/Instagram, με #potavristou, #teamocean και #akti, μαζί με τις πληροφορίες για τα σκουπίδια που μάζεψες, που είσαι (τοποθεσία) και πόσα άτομα συμμετείχατε στο συγκεκριμένο καθαρισμό.
6. Μπορείς να κατεβάσεις και να χρησιμοποιήσεις την εφαρμογή που ανέπτυξε το Ocean Conservancy για αυτό τον λόγο Clean Swell.
7. Σε περίπτωση που ο λογαριασμός σου στο Instagram είναι ιδιωτικός (private), οπότε δεν θα μπορούμε και να εντοπίσουμε τα # hashtag σου, τότε ανέβασέ τα στο facebook, στην προσωπική σου σελίδα με tag ΑΚΤΗ / AKTI Project and Research Centre ή στη σελίδα της ΑΚΤΗΣ κατευθείαν ή στείλε μας μήνυμα στο Messenger! Η ενέργεια αυτή είναι σημαντική για το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ, αφού έτσι θα γίνει εφικτό να καταγραφούν δεδομένα πεδίου και με αυτό τον τρόπο θα υπάρχουν συγκριτικά στοιχεία με αντίστοιχες προσπάθειες που έγιναν στο παρελθόν και θα ακολουθήσουν στο μέλλον. Αυτό είναι πολύ σημαντικό για την έρευνα!
8. Τι θα κάνεις τα σκουπίδια που μάζεψες?

• Αν βρίσκεσαι σε ερημική παραλία, πάρε τα μαζί σου!
• Αν βρίσκεσαι σε παραλία λουόμενων, βάλε τα στους κάδους ανακύκλωσης (κάδοι για PMD υπάρχουν αρκετοί).
• Αν βρίσκεσαι σε σκάφος, βγάλε τα στο πλησιέστερο λιμανάκι, στους αντίστοιχους κάδους.

Από πέρσι όπου η πανδημία του ιού έχει προκαλέσει και μέγα τσουνάμι πλαστικής πανδημίας η ανάγκη για μεγαλύτερη συμμετοχή γίνεται ακόμη πιο σημαντική.

Γι’ αυτό … #potavristou, όπου και να βρίσκεσαι, να καθαρίσουμε τις θάλασσες και τις ακτές μας!

The #potavristou campaign will be running again this year following its massive success over the last 3 years. Every group or individual can reach out wherever they are, pick up the litter found around them and upload their data using the Clean Swell app or send it through one of AKTI’s social media pages. They can also upload the photos on their own social media pages using the hashtags #potavristou, #akti, #SeaTheChange.

Campaign background

The #potavristou campaign is an innovative example of implementing citizens science. It was first implemented in September 2019. “Potavristou” is a word used in the Cypriot dialect which roughly translates to “reach out” or “lend a hand”. It was used to name this innovative action that was started by a group of volunteers in collaboration with AKTI Project and Research Centre. Of note is how #potavristou became a “prophetic” action. It was developed in 2019 during a time where there were no restrictions on gatherings. However, a year later, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, this was a different story. An action such as #potavristou was well-received as it allowed people to be active and help the environment without endangering themselves or others!

International recognitions

#potavristou received international recognition from its very first year! In 2020 an international competition was organised by Ocean Conservancy, a multinational organisation, to promote the 10 most innovative beach clean-up actions of 2019. Among the hundreds of entries from more than 130 different countries, AKTI’s submission with #potavristou initiative was awarded as one of the 10 most innovative actions worldwide! In 2021 #potavristou received the recognition and support from the MIO-ECSDE (the Mediterranean Information Office · for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development). For 2022 #potavristou received once more the support of  the international Ocean Conservancy within its campaign #TeamSeas.

Results from the previous #potavristou campaigns

On the 21^st of September 2019 on International Coastal Cleanup Day, the organisers encouraged the audience to help clean our seas and coasts, wherever they may be. On this day, more than 500 people reached out and collected surrounding litter. This included items such as glass and plastic cups, bottles, bags, food containers, drinks cans, nets, etc. 5.5 tonnes of waste were collected that day and removed before they could begin their vicious cycle of entering the sea and coming back into our lives in the form of microplastics.

After the incredibly positive response that this campaign received in 2019, #potavristou was run again in 2020 during the whole month of September. The results from the #potavristou_2020 campaign were astonishing: 2016 volunteers took part, data was sent for 187 different locations in Cyprus and 20 locations abroad, 12 tonnes of litter were collected (70% of which was plastic), additionally there was a reach of 12 million through the media and AKTI’s social media pages!

We continued with this same amazing success in 2021. 2590 volunteers cleaned up 13.5 tonnes of litter across 114 locations in Cyprus and 63 locations abroad! Worryingly, 87% of this 13.5 tonnes of litter was plastic, a much greater percentage than the year before! This shows the increasing importance of the #potavristou campaign and the need to continue raising awareness and cleaning our beaches!

In total, during the past 3 years, 5016 volunteers have been engaged in #potavristou, from all around Cyprus and 134 locations all over the globe, and they collected 30,5 tones of litter!

Instructions to get involved with #potavristou

1. You can take part as an individual, with your group or through an organised event.
2. Wherever you may be, either at the beach or on a boat, reach out and pick up any litter in sight! You can also go a bit further and perform a thorough beach clean-up!
3. Separate the litter into groups and count the individual items e.g., this many plastic bottles, this many cigarette butts etc.
4. Take a photo.
5. Upload this photo to Facebook/Twitter/Instagram with the hashtags #potavristou, #SeaTheChange and #akti, along with the relevant data (number, type), collection location and how many people were involved.
6. You can also use the Clean Swell app developed by the Ocean Conservancy.
7. In the case of you owning a private Instagram account, please upload to Facebook as we will not be able to see your post. In your Facebook post tag ΑΚΤΗ / AKTI Project and Research Centre. Alternatively, you can send it through AKTI’s webpage or just send it through our Facebook Messenger! Doing this helps us here at AKTI as it allows us to record field data that can be used to compare results both from the past and in the future.
8. What will you do with the litter you have collected?

• If you are at a remote beach, take it with you!
• If you are at an organised beach, put it in the available rubbish bins (there should also be some PMD bins around)
• If you are on a boat, dispose of it in the corresponding bins when you make port.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting increase in plastic pollution, the need for a greater number of participants is critical!

Therefore, be a part of #potavristou and reach out wherever you may be, to help clean our seas and coasts!

We are proud to announce that with funding from the Ocean Conservancy, we are now part of the #TeamSeas initiative!

Throughout the months of September and October we will be performing a series of beach and seabed cleanups across Cyprus to involve the local community in cleaning up our seas, raise awareness on the issue of marine litter, and collect valuable data!

Yesterday, on the 22nd of June 2022, the Zero Waste Beach Champions 2022 were awarded by AKTI Project and Research Centre in collaboration with the Coca-Cola Foundation under the Zero Waste Beach project.

After a rigorous evaluation process, nine coastal businesses from all over Cyprus were selected and awarded for their Good Practices in the categories of Sustainability, Innovation, Environmental and Social Responsibility!

Την πρώτη θέση παγκόσμια κατέκτησε το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ στον διαγωνισμό για Βέλτιστες Πρακτικές-Best Practices που διοργάνωσε ο Διεθνής Οργανισμός για τη Γαλάζια Σημαία, ανάμεσα στις χώρες που συμμετέχουν στο διεθνές πρόγραμμα της Γαλάζιας Σημαίας. Πρόκειται για την καλή πρακτική της συνεργασίας του Δήμου της Γεροσκήπου με το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ, που αφορά την μείωση της πλαστικής ρύπανσης. Η καλή πρακτική πήρε την πρώτη θέση  στην κατηγορία «Συνέργειες/κοινές δράσεις με άλλα Προγράμματα του Ιδρύματος της Γαλάζιας Σημαίας για την Περιβαλλοντική Εκπαίδευση».

Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τις αρνητικές επιπτώσεις που επιφέρουν τα πλαστικά στην καθημερινότητά μας, ο Δήμος Γεροσκήπου σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ και με τη συμμετοχή των σχολείων της περιοχής Γεροσκήπου, ξεκίνησε ένα έργο στη βραβευμένη με Γαλάζια Σημαία Δημοτική Παραλία της Γεροσκήπου, για μείωση, επαναχρησιμοποίηση και ανακύκλωση PMD, από τα οποία πάνω από το 90% είναι πλαστικό.

AKTI Project and Research Centre won the first place in the International Competition for Best Practices, organized by the International Blue Flag Organization, amongst other participants from all over the world participating in the International ”Blue Flag Program”. Together with the Municipality of Geroskipou, this ”Good Practice” aims to reduce the plastic pollution from the coasts. This practice took the first place in the category of “Synergies / joint actions with other Programs of the Blue Flag Foundation for Environmental Education”.

Taking in to consideration all the above negative impacts that plastics bring to our everyday lives, the Municipality of Geroskipou in cooperation with Akti Project Research Center and with the participation of the schools in the area of Geroskipou, initiated a project at the Blue Flag Beach of Laiki Paralia,  to reduce, reuse and recycle PMD, out of which, over 90% is plastic.
